Bed Bug Prevention:
- Always have inside and outside clothing to prevent bed bugs from making their way onto your bed, sofa or chairs.
- Never sit on your sofa, chairs or bed with your outside clothes. Never place clothing you wore outside on these surfaces.
- Line your dirty laundry basket with a garbage bag and keep it close to prevent any possible bed bugs that might be on your clothes from getting out.
- Always place jackets and sweaters inside closets this will keep bed bugs as far away from your bed as possible.
- If possible try painting your house in light colours like a light grey or white. This will make any bed bugs crawling on the walls easier to see.
- Always purchase mattress protectors for your bed.
- It’s important to be vigilant, if you notice any bites on your hands, arms or legs it’s a good time to investigate. Strip your bed and look into the seams or cresses for any potential signs of bed bugs. It’s important to do the same check on your sofa or chairs especially if you’ve noticed any bites. Bites will usually show-up as small red dots.
- Seeing a single bed bug, especially on your walls doesn’t necessarily mean you have an infestation. There are instances where a single bed bug might wonder from a next door neighbour's home into yours.
- Wash clothes in hot water if possible and dry on high heat if possible or safe for your clothing material.
- Keeping your home clean will help with the spread of an infestation. Declutter your home to prevent places where bed bugs can hide. Vacuum your sofa and chairs regularly.
Possible Ways of getting Bed Bugs:- We are all at risk of getting bed bugs, whether your a clean person or a messy person bed bugs don’t care!
- You can pick up bed bugs from almost any where you sit where someone else has sat.
- Some common places to come in contact with bed bugs are movie theatres, taxis or Ubers, restaurants, public transit buses or trains, classrooms, hair salons or barber chairs, hotel and motels.
- If you have a partner who has bed bugs at their home it’s a very good possibility they will transfer them to your home, particularly if you spend time at each others homes.
- If you have friends that has bed bugs and they come to spend time at your home its very possible they can bring bed bugs from their home to yours.
- Always examine any second hand furniture you purchase or receive.
Bed Bug Facts:
- Bed Bugs have been living amongst humans for thousands years, from when people lived in caves.
- Bed Bugs can survive for months without feeding, in some documented instances they can live up to a year.
- Female bed bugs will run away from males, mating is literally life or death experience for the females so are typically on the run.
- Bed Begs are not known to spread diseases to humans.
- Bed Bugs are able to sense your body heat and the carbon dioxide you exhale. Which means they know when your in the room.
- Bed bugs are most active between midnight and 5:00am.
- Bed bugs are typically found in cracks and crevices, walls, bedding, furniture and clothing.
- Bed bugs only feed on blood.
- Bed bugs can and will feed on animals like dogs, cats or birds if human hosts are not available.
Bed Bug Treatments:
- Heat Treatment is the number one way to get rid of bed bugs. Temperatures of 120°F or 48°C is lethal to bed bugs.
- Vacuuming can help clear the affected area of bed bugs. Vacuum its self won’t kill the bed bug but it can capture them. Make sure to empty the vacuum canister into a plastic bag and dispose of the bag into a garbage away from your home.
- Pesticides and chemical treatments can also be effective.
- Diatomaceous Earth (Food Grade) can be used as a supplementary treatment for bed bugs. This is a good option for mild infestations or should be used in combination with other treatments like heat or chemical.
- Not suggested as a form of treatment but rubbing alcohol will kill bed bugs on contact, the higher the rubbing alcohol percentage the quicker it will kill them.
